chapter 5 vocabulary

•Pg. 176 “The pews were decrepit .” Pew: long bench with backs; used in church by the congregation. The pews in the church are so hard and stiff that they make your butt hurt.
Pg. 176 “Migrants would loiter, drink and smoke around the church.” Loiter: to linger aimlessly or as if aimless in or about a place. Bums usually loiter outside of bars waiting to be given a scrap of food or booze.
•Pg. 172 “His focus is one instilled by mentors at the seminary.” Seminary: A school, especially a theological school for the training of priests, ministers, or rabbis. In the seminary the priests were so strict that on various occasions kids would run away from the place.
•Pg. 173 “He settled into a tiny room off the pantry, into which a narrow bed and chest of drawers just fit.” Pantry: a small storeroom for storing foods or wines. The pantry was so full of food that the door could not be closed all the way.
•Pg.162 “ The trek to San Antonio take several days , in a desert heat up to 120 degrees [and] lacerating cactus needle. Lacerating: Having jagged, deeply cut edges: lacerate leaves. The edges of the forest were full of lacerating leaves that grew on humongous trees that seemed to be potent sentinels.
