Enrique's Journey Chapter 6
•On what day is Enrique finally united with his mother?
Enrique is finally united with his mother on May 21, 2000.
•In what state does Enrique ultimately reunite with his mother?
Enrique reunites with his mother in the state of North Carolina.
•On November 2, 2000, another significant event happens to Enrique. What is it?
Enrique becomes a dad on this day, his girlfriend, Maria Isabel gives birth to their baby girl.
•Contrast the sides of the Rio Grande. What is Enrique’s life like on his side of the river that in Mexico is called Rio Bravo?
His life on the Mexican side of the river was harsh and dangerous, full of fears and hope. Now on the American side his life is filled with happiness, promises and a new future of prosperity.
•Describe Enrique’s final journey into the United States.
Enrique’s last journey was successful and he made it through to the United States. He has made it to his mom’s house and he is happy to be with her.

chapter 5 vocabulary
•Pg. 176 “The pews were decrepit .” Pew: long bench with backs; used in church by the congregation. The pews in the church are so hard and stiff that they make your butt hurt.

1.How does Enrique make money to buy a phone card? First he tries to work for money but he doesn’t gain much so he resorts to begging.
2.Why must Enrique call Honduras first? He must call Honduras first because he doesn’t have his mother’s phone number and his uncle has to give it to him.
3.Who helps Enrique cross the border into the United States? El Tirindaro helps Enrique across the border.
4.List the people involved in this chapter, how they affect Enrique on this journey? There are various people that help Enrique on his journey. Up to this point when he reaches Nuevo Laredo he has accomplished to interact with Padre Leo who is a very compassionate priest that helps many migrants and gives them food and shelter. Also his mom and uncle influence him. His uncle by giving him his mother’s phone number, and his mother by making him want to be with her more.

•What significant change takes place when Enrique reaches Veracruz? Every one in Veracruz is very friendly. They help the migrants. Even if they are poor they give to those who don’t have anything.

chapter 3 enrique's journey
1.Describe Chiapas. How is it different from other places Enrique travels? Chiapas is a very dangerous place to be it is filled with corrupt cops and full of gangsters. The people there are mean and they don’t like migrants.
2.What dangers does Enrique face on his journey? He always faces the dangers of falling from the train into the tracks or of being killed by one of the gangsters.
3.Why is it not a good idea to sleep on the train? The movements of the train can send you off the train easily which could mean instant death. Also, it is easier for officials and migras to catch the migrants.
4.Olga Sanchez Martinez is one of the people along Enrique’s route. How is she different from those who try to hurt Enrique? Olga is one of the very few people who are described in the book as compassionate and helpful. She helps those who need help even though she can barely pay for their medical attentions. She mostly begs for thing to help those who are hurt.
5.Trace the different names given to the train. What does each name reveal about the journey? Many different names are given to the train depending on what people view it as.
6.The gangs aboard the trains are portrayed in both a positive and negative light. How? Some of the gangs are made to seem good because it is true that with their friendship people gain protection. Yet many are bad too because they hurt others and rival gangs can also hurt you if you hang out with their rivals.
7.How is Oaxaca different? Oaxaca is very different than the southern part of Mexico. The people in Oaxaca are very friendly and caring and giving.
